Welcome to the Garden Congregation Youtube Channel!

Thank you for joining us!

When Canterbury Cathedral was closed because of the Covid pandemic in March 2020 the then Dean, Robert Willis, and his partner Fletcher took to filming daily services in their garden through to May 2022. Usually joined each day by at least one of their cats (Monkey, Lilly, Tiger or Leo) and a whole host of their menagerie from pigs and chickens to hedgehogs and newts and whilst sitting in the gardens through all seasons, this is a wonderful way to switch off and meditate whilst listening to a mix of poetry, recitals, current affairs, music – and of course the daily psalms and readings from the bible which are then explored and unpicked by Dean Robert.

always reminds me of a particular hymn and i'm going to read them one after the other the dove descending breaks the air with flame of incandescent terror of which the tongues declare the one discharge from sin and error the only hope or else despair lies in the choice of pyre or pyre to be redeemed from fire by fire and the hymn come down o love divine seek thou this soul of mine and visit it with thine own ardor glowing oh comforter draw near within my heart appear and kindle it thy holy flame bestowing oh let it freely burn till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight and clothe me round the while my path illuming the lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion walketh about seeking whom he may devour whom resist steadfast in the faith [Music] but thou o lord have mercy upon us thanks be to god our help is in the our lord the blessing of god almighty the father the son and the holy spirit be upon you upon those whom you love and would pray for this night and always amen the closing sections of little getting by t.s eliot what we call the beginning is often the end and to make an end is to make a beginning the end is where we start from and every phrase and sentence that is right where every word is at home taking its place to support the others the word neither diffident nor ostentatious an easy commerce of the old and the new the common word exact without vulgarity the formal word precise but not pedantic the complete consort dancing together every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning every poem and epitaph and any action is a step to the block to the fire down the sea's throat or to an illegible stone and that is where we start we die with the dying see they depart and we go with them [Music] we are born with the dead see they return and bring us with them the moment of the rose and the moment of the yew tree are of equal duration a people without history is not redeemed from time for history is a pattern of timeless moments so while the light fails on a winter's afternoon in a secluded chapel history is now and england with the drawing of this love and the voice of this calling we shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time through the unknown remembered gate when the last of earth left to discover is that which was the beginning that the source of the longest river the voice of the hidden waterfall and the children in the apple tree not known because not looked for but heard half heard in the stillness between two waves of the sea quick now here now always a condition of complete simplicity costing not less than everything and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well when the tongues of flame are enfolded into the crowned knot of fire and the fire and the rose are won so so so so oh oh foreign [Music] so and
