Compline – Sunday, 5th July 2020
Welcome to the Garden Congregation Youtube Channel!
Thank you for joining us!
When Canterbury Cathedral was closed because of the Covid pandemic in March 2020 the then Dean, Robert Willis, and his partner Fletcher took to filming daily services in their garden through to May 2022. Usually joined each day by at least one of their cats (Monkey, Lilly, Tiger or Leo) and a whole host of their menagerie from pigs and chickens to hedgehogs and newts and whilst sitting in the gardens through all seasons, this is a wonderful way to switch off and meditate whilst listening to a mix of poetry, recitals, current affairs, music – and of course the daily psalms and readings from the bible which are then explored and unpicked by Dean Robert.

have desired to go where springs not fail to fields where flies no sharp and sided hail and a few lilies blow and i have asked to be where no storms come where the green swell is in the haven's done and out of the swing of the sea the lord almighty grant us a quiet night and the perfect end amen be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion walketh about seeking whom he may devour whom resist steadfast in the faith but thou o lord have mercy upon us thanks be to god our help is in the name of the lord who hath made heaven and earth so we keep silence a moment to reflect on the hours of this sunday and to make any acts of penitence that we would want to make we confess to god almighty the father the son and the holy ghost before the whole company of heaven spirit be upon you upon those whom you love and would pray for this night and always amen our prayers completed and as the water lily closes marking the end of this day some verses about the work of the day and the evening coming just the first four verses of tennyson's lady of shalott on either side the river lie long fields of barley and of rye that close the world and meet the sky and through the field the road runs by to many towered camelot up and down the people go gazing where the lilies blow round an island there below the island of shalott willows whiten aspen's quiver little breezes dusk and shiver through the wave that runs forever by the island in the river flowing down to camelot four grey walls and four grey towers overlook a space of flowers and the silent isle embowers the lady of shalott by the margin willow veiled slide the heavy barges trailed by slow horses and unhailed the shallop fitted silken sailed skimming down to camelot but who had seen her wave her hand or at the casement seen her stand or is she known in all the land the lady of shalott only reapers reaping early in among the bearded bali hear a song that echoes cheerlead from the river winding clearly down to towered camelot and by the moon the reaper weary piling sheaves in uplands airy listening whispers tis the fairy lady of shalom so so [Music] you
