Due to the dangerous storms it was ruled unsafe for a service to take place inside the cathedral this evening so whilst Dean Robert and Canon Tim will say Evensong in the cathedral this will not be filmed or have the choir in attendance so we also bring you this choral evensong (with pre-recorded music) by way of an alternative.

Welcome to the Garden Congregation Youtube Channel!

Thank you for joining us!

When Canterbury Cathedral was closed because of the Covid pandemic in March 2020 the then Dean, Robert Willis, and his partner Fletcher took to filming daily services in their garden through to May 2022. Usually joined each day by at least one of their cats (Monkey, Lilly, Tiger or Leo) and a whole host of their menagerie from pigs and chickens to hedgehogs and newts and whilst sitting in the gardens through all seasons, this is a wonderful way to switch off and meditate whilst listening to a mix of poetry, recitals, current affairs, music – and of course the daily psalms and readings from the bible which are then explored and unpicked by Dean Robert.

Thank you again for visiting this Channel and we hope that you will enjoy the films if this is your first time here – and if so then welcome to the Garden Congregation!

For Morning Prayer Dean Robert uses the Church of England book, “Common Worship Daily Prayer 2005” (Church House publishing). The bible is the English Standard Version (Collins), and occasionally - though always stated - Dean Robert uses the New Revised Standard Version or the King James.

good afternoon and welcome to the deanery at canterbury cathedral on this afternoon of friday the 18th of february we are suffering as so much of the country is suffering the worst storm that we've seen in this part of england certainly if i speak for kent for a very long time 30 years or so and it has been very damaging to all kinds of buildings and properties and very dangerous for people to walk outside and in the precincts the cathedral is shut and also there has been significant damage to stonework and and things which have fallen but it is also dangerous because of tree branches uh and and other dangerous objects and so we thought because we've shut the cathedral that we would come into pierre and say a simple even song with the words of the the book of common prayer as we normally would in the cathedral and the office will be said in the cathedral but the the people themselves will not be there this afternoon and there's no facility in the little chapel for um sending this online so we thought for those of you who wanted an office of even song on this afternoon we will simply say it here together in the deanery morning room wherever you are in the world feel welcome and we're sorry that there's no live music but we shall give you some recorded music so that you get a flavor of a sung even song this afternoon so we begin our prayers and as i always say bring your own concerns and intentions as we pray but we here are obviously praying for those in huge danger at the moment still as the storm has not abated yet but a massive amount of damage has been done in other parts of the country with this storm eunice in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost amen o lord open thou our lips and our mouth shall show forth thy praise o god make speed to save us o lord make haste to help us glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end amen praise ye the lord the lord's name be praised the psalms for the 18th evening of the month are psalms 93 and 94. and we shall read those now the lord is king and has put on glorious apparel the lord has put on his apparel and girded himself with strengths he hath made the round world so sure that it cannot be moved ever since the world began hath thy seat been prepared thou art from everlasting the floods are risen o lord the floods have lift up their voice the floods lift up their waves the waves of the sea are mighty and rage horribly but yet the lord who dwelleth on high is mightier thy testimonies o lord are very sure holiness becometh thine house forever glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end amen psalm 94 o lord god to whom vengeance belongs thou god to whom vengeance belongeth show thyself arise thou judge of the world and reward the proud after they desire after their deserving lord how long shall the ungodly how long shall the ungodly triumph how long shall all wicked doers speak so disdainfully and make such proud boasting they smite down thy people o lord and troubleline heritage they murder the widow and the stranger and put the fatherless to death and yet they say touch the lord shall not see neither shall the god of jacob regard it take heed ye unwise among the people oh ye fools when will he understand he that planted the ear shall he not hear or he that made the eye shall he not see or he that nurtureth the heathen it is he that teacheth man knowledge shall not he punish the lord knoweth the thoughts of man that they are but vain blessed is the man whom now chastised o lord and teachest him in thy law that thou mayest give him patience in time of adversity until the pit be digged up for the ungodly for the lord will not fail his people neither will he forsake his inheritance until righteousness turn again unto judgment all such as our true in heart shall follow it who will rise up with me against the wicked or who will take my part against the evil doers if the lord had not helped me it had not failed but my soul had been put to silence but when i said my foot has slipped mercy o lord help me up in the multitude of the sorrows that i had in my heart thy comforts have refreshed my soul will thou have anything to do with the stool of wickedness which imagine if mischief as a law they gather them together against the soul of the righteous and condemn innocent blood but the lord is my refuge and my god is the strength of my confidence he shall recompense them their wickedness and destroy them in their own malice yea the lord our god shall destroy them glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end amen to the first of our lessons is taken from the second book of the chronicles and i'm beginning the second uh the seventh sorry the sixth chapter and i am beginning at verse 36 this is the conclusion of solomon's prayer asking blessing on his temple if your people sin against you o lord for there is no one who does not sin and you are angry with them and give them to an enemy so that they are carried away captive to a land far or near is if they turn their heart in the land to which they have been carried captive and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity saying we have sinned and have acted perversely and wickedly if they repent with all their mind and with all their heart in the land of their captivity to which they were carried captive and pray towards their land which you gave to their fathers the city that you have chosen and the house that i have built for your name then here from heaven your dwelling place and when you hear forgive hear from heaven your dwelling place their prayer and their pleas and maintain their cause and forgive your people who have sinned against you now oh my god let your eyes be open and your ears attentive to the prayer of this place now arise o lord god and go to your resting place you and the ark of your might let your priests so lord god be clothed with salvation and let your saints rejoice in your goodness o lord god do not turn away the face of your anointed one remember your steadfast love for david your servant [Music] see [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] lesson is written in the 18th chapter of the gospel of saint john beginning at the 12th verse so the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the jews arrested jesus and bound him first they led him to anas for he was the father-in-law of caiaphas who was high priests that year it was kaifas who had advised the jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people simon peter followed jesus and so did another disciple and since that disciple was known to the high priest he entered with jesus into the court of the high priest but peter stood outside at the door so the other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door and brought peter in the servant girl at the door said to peter you also are not one of the man's disciples are you peter said i am not now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire because it was cold and they were standing and warming themselves by the fire peter also was with them standing and warming himself the high priest then questioned jesus about his disciples and his teaching and jesus answered him i have spoken openly to the world i have always taught in synagogues and in the temple where all jews come together i have said nothing in secret why do you ask me ask those who have heard me what i said to them they know what i said when jesus had said these things one of the officers standing by struck jesus with his hand saying is that how you answer the high priest jesus answered him if what i said is wrong bear witness about the wrong but if what i said is right why do you strike me anas then sent him bound to caiaphas the high priest now simon peter was standing and warming himself so they said to him you also are not one of his disciples are you peter denied it and said i am not one of the servants of the high priest a relative of the man whose ear peter had cut off asked did i not see you in the garden with him peter again denied it and at once the crowed here ends the second lesson oh [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] is [Music] us [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] this is oh [Music] uh [Music] so [Music] i believe in god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy ghost born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified dead and buried he descended into hell the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of god the father almighty from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead i believe in the holy ghost the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting amen the lord be with you and with thy spirit let us pray lord have mercy upon us christ have mercy upon us lord have mercy upon us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil amen o lord share thy mercy upon us and grant us thy salvation o lord save the queen and mercifully hear us when we call upon thee and do thy ministers with righteousness and make thy chosen people joyful oh lord save thy people and bless sign inheritance give peace in our time o lord because there is none other that fighteth for us but only thou o god o god make clean our hearts within us and take not thy holy spirit from us o lord we beseech thee faithfully to hear the prayers of thy people that we who are justly punished for our offenses may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness for the glory of thy name through jesus christ our savior who liveth and reigneth with thee and the holy ghost ever one god world without end amen oh god from whom all holy desires all good counsels and all just works to proceed give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments and also that by the we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness through the merits of jesus christ our savior amen lighten our darkness we beseech thee oh lord and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night for the love of thy only son our savior jesus christ amen as we come to say our prayers in words and in silence we remember the dangers that peoples face the world over we are very aware this afternoon of particular dangers for these islands with the very heavy storm and the large amount of damage that has been done and danger to the safety and welfare of people but we are very conscious that that is just a tiny tiny fraction of the dangers which people face daily across the world from all kinds of climate changes and of military activity and as we remember them we will all be thinking of different places different peoples so we entrust them into the hands of god and here in this place we pray for those who will be going home from work in their cars and facing the dangers of the roads and at the same time the heavy winds which are still blowing and the heavy seas pertaining at the moment so let's think of all those who so much need our prayers tonight as we keep silence for a moment so oh god who knows just to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright grant our such strengths and protection as may support us in all dangers and carry us and all who are in danger and those whom we love through all temptations through jesus christ our lord amen almighty god who has given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee and us promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy name thou wilt grant their requests fulfill now o lord the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be most expedient for them granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth and in the world to come life everlasting amen and then from now o god thou art my god by henry purcell uh [Music] sleep [Music] [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] [Music] time [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] me [Music] all right [Music]
