Welcome to the Garden Congregation Youtube Channel!

Thank you for joining us!

When Canterbury Cathedral was closed because of the Covid pandemic in March 2020 the then Dean, Robert Willis, and his partner Fletcher took to filming daily services in their garden through to May 2022. Usually joined each day by at least one of their cats (Monkey, Lilly, Tiger or Leo) and a whole host of their menagerie from pigs and chickens to hedgehogs and newts and whilst sitting in the gardens through all seasons, this is a wonderful way to switch off and meditate whilst listening to a mix of poetry, recitals, current affairs, music – and of course the daily psalms and readings from the bible which are then explored and unpicked by Dean Robert.

jesus [Music] ah [Music] oh [Music] welcome to canterbury cathedral early in the morning on this easter day as we proclaim the resurrection of jesus christ and make our alleluias clear we cannot join together in our churches in worship but we can by this means of filming ourselves right across the world give you easter joy and greetings on this day and we say our early morning praise ready for worship throughout the day o lord open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise in your resurrection o christ let heaven and earth rejoice hallelujah blessed are you lord god of our salvation to you be praise and glory forever as once you ransomed your people from egypt and led them to freedom in the promised land so now you have delivered us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your risen son may we the first fruits of your new creation rejoice in this new day you have made and praise you for your mighty acts blessed be god father son and holy spirit blessed be god forever we use instead of a psalm on easter morning verses taken from the early writings of the apostles in the early church they are known as the easter anthems christ our passover has been sacrificed for us so let us celebrate the feast not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth christ once raised from the dead dies no more death has no more dominion over him in dying he died to sin once for all in living he lives to god see yourselves therefore as dead to sin and alive to god in jesus christ our lord christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who sleep for as by man came death by man has come also the resurrection of the dead for as in adam all die even so in christ shall all be made alive glory to the father and to the son and to the holy spirit as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever amen the night has passed and the day lies open before us let us then pray with one heart and mind some verses first from saint mark's gospel the last chapter chapter 16 we begin at verse 1 and end where the gospel of saint mark breaks off at verse 8. and when the sabbath was passed mary magdalene and mary the mother of james and salome bought spices so that they might go and anoint jesus and very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen and they were saying to one another who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb and looking up they saw that the stone was rolled back it was very large and entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side dressed in a white robe and they were amazed and he said to them do not be amazed you seek jesus of nazareth who was crucified he has risen he is not here see the place where they laid him but go tell his disciples and peter that he is going before you to galilee there you will see him as he told you and they went out and fled from the tomb or trembling and astonishment had come upon them and they said nothing to anyone for they were afraid they will gain courage others will come to the tomb and as the story of that first easter day is told in our worship throughout the day we shall come to the realization with all of them that something amazing and different in an order of new creation a new day new hope new faith new love has dawned but for the moment the surprise the shock is too grief too great their grief is too deep they run and for the moment say nothing to anyone and until they let it be known to the apostles who then come to the tomb as we shall see in our worship later in the day later this morning at 12 o'clock we shall be celebrating a great eucharist for easter together together by this means created in our own houses and put together that we may rejoice and sing and hear our archbishop preach here also the prince of wales read the easter gospel from the gospel of saint john but for the moment we're here at the tomb in the surprise and shock and amazement of the women who first came now and the words of the young man are the words that jesus had spoken on the night before he was betrayed as they went towards the garden of gethsemane after i am risen i will go before you to galilee where all things began those are my words not his at the end for that is where all things did begin he came into galilee proclaiming the kingdom of god is upon you repent and believe in the good news that was the focus of his ministry then it will be the focus of the ministry of the body of christ from that time on in the world rejoice and believe in good news that we reach out for on this strange easter day when physically we are separated from each other because of the spreading disease but at the same time as human beings we always reach out for hope for the eternal yes to our fears and grief and suffering for that early on this day of resurrection we give thanks for christ is risen alleluia we say our prayers for all those whom we love those who this morning perhaps through news bulletins are on our hearts prayers of thanksgiving for those who support us in our daily life in whatever way those who are combating the disease in centers of medicine and health but also those who support us in ordinary ways all putting their own lives at risk as they go about their daily work to keep life going those prayers we say together and at the same time as always here in canterbury the mother church of a worldwide communion we pray this weekend for all the provinces for all christian leaders and leaders who lead their people to faith and to new hope and to new love of their humanity and of its ability to reach out for things which are eternal and for new creation new life we pray in this diocese for the parishes and the communities of faith for justin our archbishop paul rose bishop of dover for tim bishop atlanta and as we pray we continue to give great thanks for the easter message lord of all life and power who through the mighty resurrection of your son overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him grant that we being dead to sin and alive to you in jesus christ may reign with him in glory to whom with you and the holy spirit he praise and honor glory and might now and in all eternity amen so we say on this easter morning as the sun gathers strength the our father in whatever words whatever language you would normally use and make it our prayer for each other and our prayer for thanksgiving for the resurrection of jesus christ our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom the power and the glory forever and ever are men so in a moment of silence we say our own prayers for those on our hearts on this special day of the year [Music] on this easter morning may the peace of god which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of god and of his son jesus christ our lord and the blessing of god almighty the father the son and the holy spirit be among you and among those whom you love this easter day and always amen christ is risen alleluia he is risen indeed hallelujah [Music] oh [Music] uh [Music] you
