Compline – Sunday, 17th May 2020
Welcome to the Garden Congregation Youtube Channel!
When Canterbury Cathedral was closed because of the Covid pandemic in March 2020 the then Dean, Robert Willis, and his partner Fletcher took to filming daily services in their garden through to May 2022. Usually joined each day by at least one of their cats (Monkey, Lilly, Tiger or Leo) and a whole host of their menagerie from pigs and chickens to hedgehogs and newts and whilst sitting in the gardens through all seasons, this is a wonderful way to switch off and meditate whilst listening to a mix of poetry, recitals, current affairs, music – and of course the daily psalms and readings from the bible which are then explored and unpicked by Dean Robert.

good evening and welcome to the orchard in the dinery garden of canterbury cathedral as we come to the last service of the day on this regation sunday when we have given thanks for all god's gifts of growth and fruitfulness in his world in whichever nation we are in and at whatever stage the season of planting and growth and harvesting is here in england it's the middle of may and therefore very much springtime so there's much new growth around us we give thanks for that but we have remembered throughout the day that this is a time of reminding ourselves that the gifts of god are to be shared with all those who need those gifts most of all thankfulness and sharing encouragement of each other and praying for each other at this time when healing is so necessary for so many and also companionship for those in lockdown so we begin this last little service of the day which changes very little although i have tried tonight to give it a regression tied dimension and theme the order for complin the lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end amen be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion walketh about seeking whom he may devour whom resist steadfast in the face but thou o lord have mercy upon us thanks be to god oh god make speed to save us o lord make haste to help us glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end amen praise ye the lord the lord's name be praised the first of our psalms this evening is a regation psalm rather than a compliment sound but it gives us the sense of god's works and fruitfulness and the beauty of his world we say part 1 of psalm 104 praise the lord o my soul o lord my god thou art become exceeding glorious thou art clothed with majesty and honor now decast thyself with light as it were with a garment and spread it out the heavens like a curtain who layers the beams of his chambers in the waters and maketh the clouds his chariot and walketh upon the wings of the wind he maketh his angels spirits and his ministers a flaming fire he laid the foundations of the earth that it never should move at any time now covers it with the deep lykes with a garment the waters stand in the hills at thy rebuke they flee at the voice of thy thunder they are afraid they go up as high as the hills and down to the valleys beneath even unto the place which thou hast appointed for them thou has set them their bounds which they shall not pass neither turn again to cover the earth he send it the springs into the rivers which run among the hills all beasts of the field drink thereof and the wild asses quench their thirst beside them shall the fowls of the air have their habitation and sing among the branches he watereth the hills from above the earth is filled with the fruit of thy works he bringeth forth grass for the cattle and green herb for the service of men that he may bring food out of the earth and wine that maketh glad the heart of man and oil to make him a cheerful countenance and bread to strengthen man's heart the trees of the lord also are full of sap even the cedars of lebanese which he hath planted wherein the birds make their nests and the fir trees are a dwelling for the stalk the high hills are a refuge for the wild goats and so are the stony rocks for the cones he appointed the moon for certain seasons and the sun knoweth his going down now make his darkness that it may be night wherein all the beasts of the forest who move the lions roaring after their prey do seek their meat from god the sun arises and they get them away together and lay them down in their dens man goes forth to his work and to his labor until the evening oh lord how manifold are thy works in wisdom has thou made them all the earth is full of thy riches glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end amen in
